Atletico Madrid lost the chance to move up the standings in LaLiga after they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw away to Athletic Bilbao.
In what was their first match since March, Diego Simeone’s men fell behind to captain Iker Muniain’s strike in the 37th minute, but Diego Costa leveled two minutes later in what was his first Atletico Madrid goal of 2020.
Iker Muniain’s delightful 37th-minute opener was cancelled out 129 seconds later by Diego Costa, who claimed his third goal of the season and first since October.
The striker paid tribute in his celebration to Atletico’s women’s team midfielder Virginia Torrecilla, who underwent successful surgery to have a brain tumor removed last month. Costa showed a shirt bearing her name.
The draw, however, meant they lost more ground in the race for a top-four finish, ahead of a mid-week tie against Osasuna.
They will have themselves to blame for failing to finish off the game, despite creating numerous chances, particularly in the second half.
Atleti, who shocked defending champions Liverpool in the last-16 of the Champions League in March will now have to pick as many points as possible going into the last 10 games, or risk missing out.
Sociedad will be in action later tonight when they host Osasuna, knowing a win could take them a point behind third-placed Sevilla on 49 points.
