Barcelona and Bayern Munich lock horns in a single-leg Champions League quarter-final match in Lisbon on Friday night (20:00 kick-off). The pick of the quarter-final ties in this season’s UEFA Champions League will take place in Lisbon on Friday night as Barcelona take on Bayern Munich for a spot in the final four.
Barca have endured a rocky season but booked their place in the quarter-finals for the 13th consecutive year after seeing off Napoli in the last 16. Quique Setien’s side now face a daunting game against Bayern, who have beaten them more times in the Champions League than any other club.
The last time these two sides met Barca got the better of their German counterparts, beating Bayern in the 2014/15 semi-finals, but can the Catalan club repeat that trick and book their ticket in the penultimate round against one of Lyon or Man City?

Barca will again be without Samuel Umtiti due to a knee injury, but Ousmane Dembele has returned to training following a long-term hamstring issue, and the Frenchman could be involved off the bench.
The Spanish club will also be boosted by the returns of midfielders Sergio Busquets and Arturo Vidal from suspension, and there is a feeling that both players will come into the starting XI.
Thiago Alcantara continues to be linked with a move away from the Allianz Arena but should again join Leon Goretzka in the middle of the park, with Javi Martinez on the bench.
Philippe Coutinho is available to face his parent club on Friday night, although it seems likely that the Brazil international will be named on the bench. Alphonso Davies should also start despite sitting out Wednesday’s training session with tight adductors.
Barcelona & Bayern Munich’s previous line-ups:
- Barcelona (vs Napoli): Ter-Stegen; Semedo, Pique, Lenglet, Alba; Roberto, Rakitic, De Jong; Griezmann, Messi, Suarez.
- Bayern Munich (vs Chelsea): Neuer; Kimmich, Boateng, Alaba, Davies; Goretzka, Thiago, Gnabry, Muller, Perisic; Lewandowski.
Both Sergio Busquets and Arturo Vidal were suspended for the Napoli clash but return for this crucial encounter against Bayern. Samuel Umtiti meanwhile remains on the treatment table, but Ousmane Dembele has returned to training, though he is expected to start on the bench.
For Bayern, Kingsley Coman faces a late fitness test but will undoubtedly start on the bench if he makes the matchday squad as Ivan Perisic enjoyed a fruitful match against Chelsea, while Philippe Coutinho also came on as a second-half substitute and caught the eye.
Barcelona vs Bayern Munich Head To Head
As mentioned, these two teams have met on 10 previous occasions in European competition, and Bayern lead the head-to-head six wins to Barca’s two, with two draws also occurring.
